Longrow Cadenhead's Authentic Collection. Distilled 1998, bottled April 2012. 13 years old. Bourbon Hogshead. 306 bottles, 55.0 % Vol.

Expections are always in high altitudes when you crack open a Cadenhead’s bottling from the Springbank distillery. ( …oops, I broke the cork, but no worries, I have a few spares…)

Color: Straw.

Nose: I know, this is from Islay – someone eager might shout in a blind tasting. Barbeque bacon & sweet peat. A bowl of ripe tropical fruits next to a cow stable. Haha!- a hint of Suave hair cream which my dad used to comb into his black hair in my childhood (it is not an unpleasent odor) . Very nice and alluring aromas, so how about the palate?

Palate: First impression - somehow it reminds me of Ardbeg’s Airigh Nam Beist 1990. I cannot pinpoint exactly what it is, but perhabs it is this creamy sweet smokiness that rings the bells.  Gentle sweet’n oily vegetal peat. Mustard oil and salmiac (Turkish pepper, a famous Finnish salmiac sweet), toasted oak with smoked vanilla custard. The balance is spot on as neat. Adding water emhasizes vanilla notes and adds a little chalkiness to the palate. 

Finish: Medium lenght. Dries out to a little chili heat.

As you might know I’ve always been a fan of these pure bourbon matured whiskies and this robust beauty makes absolutely no difference.  Perfect winter warmer as they say.

Highland Park Saint Magnus, 12 years old 2nd Edition. 1998 Vintage, bottled 2010. 11 994 bottles. 55 %

As the header suggests, this is the second release in the Magnus series from the Highland Park, celebrating the Viking history and the Nordic heritage of the Orkney Isles. The other two bottlings in the series were Earl Magnus 15 Year Old 1st Edition and Earl Haakon 18 Year Old 3rd Edition. Saint Magnus (the whisky, not the earl) was mainly matured in sherry seasoned American oak casks along with refill bourbon casks.

Color: Amber.

Nose: Immediately you get sucked into a world of good, old sherry; some spices, cinnamon to start with, then Belgian pralines and full of Jerez oloroso sherry. Tarry smoky notes make it very cozy. Notes of Pedro Ximenez sherry vinegar add some edge and sharpness to the balance. Not forgetting the rain-moistened pebble stones.

Palate: It most certainly delivers all that the nose promises. Big tannins in the front - in other words, it is fairly dry. Full-bodied, cocoa powder and candied orange peel. Oloroso sherry, which turns with time into sweet Pedro Ximenez sherry. Cinnamon with a capital C. Towards the end some lovely salty liquorice. After a good half an hour - railway tracks on a hot summer day (tar), from the horizon carried by the wind, a puff of kiln smoke. Water brings out mixed herbs that add a new dimension to the palate, but still I slightly prefer this one neat.

Finish: Semi dry, long - from a dry, nutty oloroso to a sweet PX.

Quite magnificent oloroso-driven HP. Kudos to Kirkwall!

Como se pone en el encabezado, ésta es la segunda edición en la serie Magnus de Highland Park. La serie celebra la historia de los vikingos y la herencia nórdica de las Islas Órcadas. Las previas ediciones en esta serie fueron Earl Magnus 15 años (primera edición) y Earl Haakon 18 años (tercera edición). Saint Magnus (el whisky, no el conde) fue madurado en mayor parte en barriles de roble americano sazonados de jerez y también en barriles de bourbon recargados.

Color: Ámbar.

Nariz: De inmediato entras en un mundo de buen jerez añejado; algunas notas de especias, al empezar canela, luego pralinés belgas y mucho jerez oloroso. Notas ahumadas de brea lo hacen muy acogedora. Notas de vinagre de jerez PX añaden unos toques punzantes y ácidos en el equilibrio. También hay unas notas de guijarros mojados en la lluvia.


Paladar: Sin duda llega a la altura de las expectativas después de la nariz. Primero hay grandes taninos - en otras palabras, está bastante seco. De mucho cuerpo, cacao en polvo y cáscara de naranja confitada. Jerez oloroso que se transforma con tiempo en dulce jerez Pedro Ximemez. Canela con una mayúscula C. Hacia el final aparece un poco de agradable regaliz salado. Después de una buena media hora – vía férrea en un día caluroso de verano (brea), desde el horizonte llevada por el viento, una nube de humo de kiln. Agua hace que aparezcan hierbas mixtas y eso añade una nueva dimensión al paladar, pero aun así, prefiero un poco la versión pura.

Final: Semi seco, largo - desde un seco jerez oloroso con sabor a nuez hasta un dulce PX.

Bastante magnífico HP que tiene influencias de jerez oloroso. ¡Bien hecho Kirkwall!

Spirit & Cask Range Islay, Whiskymax, 55%

I purchased this bottle in this autumn from a Bayern whisky retailer. The retailer had put a hand written sticker to the bottle neck which states "Caol Ila". However, on the label there is no mention of a specific distillery or age statement, only Islay and ABV are mentioned. So this is some kind of a NAS (No Age Statement) mystery malt. Let's see.   

Nose: Peat smoke, ashtray, extinguished campfire, strcuk matches. Breeze of salty sea air, seaweeds. Juicy sherry in the backround. Some acasia honey.

Palate: Very sweet. Tingeling peat. Sweet barley. Some sherry sweetness. Does some of this sweetness come from added caramel? "Enhältz Zuckerkulör / Includes caramel" says the back label, but however, a quote from the www.spirit-cask-range.com says: "The bottlings are offered at cask as well as at drinking strength. They are always unchillfiltered and non-coloured. A fact that goes without saying." Hmmm?? Confusing. In any case, the legislation in Germany demands the labelling to include all additional ingredients including the E150 (caramel).

Finish: Bitter sweet. Sweetened espresso. Peat smoke, caramel.
  
Since there is no information on the label, I can only guess that there were some sherry casks used for the maturation of this spirit, the strong sweetness on the palate suggests that there are even some PX-casks involved (just a wild guess). On the other hand, guessing only by color I would say first-fill sherry casks were used.

Not a bad whisky at all but it has too much caramel for me. It is a very easy-going, sweet and smoky Islayer which swims also quite well. Definitely an after dinner dram.

Spirit & Cask Range Islay, Whiskymax, 55%.

Compré esta botella en el otoño en una tienda de whisky en Baviera, Alemania. El vendedor había puesto una pegatina escrita a mano en el cuello de la botella diciendo "Caol Ila". Sin embargo, en la etiqueta no se menciona ningúna destilería específica ni ningúna declaración de edad, solo se mencionan Islay y el ABV.Así que se trata de un tipo de NAS (No Age Statement) malta misteriosa. Vamos a ver.

Nariz: Humo de turba, un cenicero, un fuego de campamento extinguido. Una brisa salada de aire de mar, alga marina. Unas cerezas jugosas en el fondo. Un poco de miel de acasia.

Paladar: Muy dulce. Turba hormigueando. Cebada dulce. Un poco de dulzura de jerez. ¿Viene una parte de esta dulzura del caramelo añadido? "Enhältz Zuckerkulör / Includes caramel" dice la etiqueta trasera pero sin embargo, en las páginas web de www.spirit-cask-range.com se dice: "Las botellas se ponen en la venta tanto en cask strength como en forma diluida. Nunca son filtrados en frío y no llevan colorantes. Un hecho que no hace falta ni decirlo."  ¿Hmmm? Confuso. En cualquier caso, la legislación en Alemania exige que la etiqueta tenga todas las ingredientes adicionales como el E150 (caramelo).

Final: Agridulce. Expresso azucarado. Humo de turba, caramelo.

Como no hay ningúna información en la etiqueta, solo puedo adivinar que tal vez ha sido madurado en barricas de jerez, la fuerte dulzura en el paladar sugiere que a lo mejor han sido barricas de PX (una suposición al azar). Por otro lado, suponiendo solo por su color, deciría que first-fill barricas de jerez fueron usadas.

No es un mal whisky en absoluto pero lleva demasiado caramelo a mi gusto. Es un Islayer dulce y ahumado que es fácil de beber. También nada bastante bien. Claramente en un dram para tomar después de la cena.
