Glenfarclas 2000 Premium Vintage edition, 15 yo. 46%. 9 000 bottles.

So, this one is a millennium vintage distillate, bottled for the German market after spending approximately 15 years in oloroso sherry casks. 

Color: Light amber. 

Nose: Sherry monster? Nah, the arrival is fairly soft and mellow - this is gentle stuff. Demerara sugar and nutty dry Jerez oloroso sherry. Caramel on a toasted bread. A whisper of curry powder. Raisins with sweet malted barley.

Palate: Semi-sweet arrival. Oloroso sherry for sure. A hint of metal spoon. Some nuts with skin. Spices show up towards the middle. A small bite of Christmas cake. I think this whisky was bottled at perfect strength, so adding water would be a waste of time (and whisky).

Finish: Dried herbs & demerara sugar. 

An easy after dinner sipper from the green meadows. Don’t bother if you’re yearning for a huge sherry bomb.

Se trata de un destilado del año 2000, embotellado para el mercado alemán después de estar aproximadamente 15 años en barricas de jerez oloroso.

Color: Ámbar claro.

Nariz: ¿Un monstruo de jerez? No, primero está bastante suave y delicado – es una copa agradable. Azúcar moreno con seco jerez oloroso y nueces. Caramelo sobre pan tostado. Un susurro de curry. Pasas con cebada malteada dulce.

Paladar: Primero está semidulce. Claramente jerez oloroso. Un poco de sabor de una cuchara metálica. Un toque de nueces con piel. Especias aparecen hacia el medio. Un trocito de tarta de navidad. Creo que este whisky está embotellado en potencia perfecta, así que añadir agua sería una pérdida de tiempo (y del whisky).

Final: Hierbas desecadas & azúcar moreno.

Un fácil trago desde las verdes prados para disfrutar después de cenar. No vale la pena si estás buscando una enorme bomba de jerez.

Clynelish 1997 Whisky in Leiden. Refill Sherry Hogshead. 15 yo, distilled 1997, bottled 2012. Specially selected by whiskysite.nl and bottled for Whisky in Leiden 2012. 180 bottles, 53,5 %

This is the very first Clynelish in this blog, and it’s about freakin’ time. I suppose everybody knows the distillery, so no fruitless babbling about it, just check eg. the Malt Madness Distillery Data if you are interested.

Color: Straw.

Nose: Yes, I know it’s a cliche to mention with Clynelish, but waxiness is the very  first thing you notice on the nose. Quite mellow with hay and honeydew melon. Yellow fruits with curry powder. Definitely has traces of bourbon. It’s a bit acidity & estery without water, so it’s advisable to add some.

Palate: Creamy, waxy and nicely fat. Citrus gives a reasonable punch and balance to the palate. Almond milk and vanilla custard smooth the edges off. The indian curry spices remind me of the official 14 yo bottling, in a little tamer fashion though. Water takes out some of the bitter orange and gives room for nice sweet fruits and honey.

Finish: Sour and spicy yet gentle. Semi long. Wax sticks to your palate.

I have to say that the sherry influence has been quite minimal in this nice dram, maybe it has given some nice fruitiness and smoothness to the whisky? Anyhow good stuff.

Este es el primerísimo Clynelish en este blog, y ya era hora. Creo que la destilería es tan familiar para todos que no voy a perder tiempo introduciéndola de ninguna manera - si quereís más información sobre ella, podeís leer más por ejemplo en la página de Malt Madness Distillery Data



Color: Paja.

Nariz: Sí, este es un tópico cuando se habla de Clynelish, pero la cerosidad es la primerísima cosa que se nota en la nariz. Bastante suave con heno y melon chino. Frutas amarillas con curry. Definitivamente hay unos rastros de bourbon. Tiene algo de ácidez y ésters sin agua y por eso es recomendable añadirle un poco de agua. 

Paladar: Cremoso, ceroso y agradablemente graso. El sabor cítrico le da un bastante fuerte puñetazo y equilibrio al paladar. Hay unas notas de leche de almendra y natillas de vainilla que suavizan su sabor. Las especias indias me recuerdan del oficial embotellamiento de 14 años, aunque de una manera un poco más sosa. El agua le quita el sabor de naranja amarga y añade en vez frutas dulces y agradables y también miel.

Final: Ácido y especiado pero suave. De largo medio. La cera se queda en el paladar.

Tengo que decir que la influencia de jerez ha sido bastante mínima esta vez, ¿a lo mejor le ha dado sabores frutales y un poco de suavidad a este whisky? De cualquier modo, buen producto.

Glenburgie 1997, Gordon & MacPhail Reserve, 15 yo. Distilled 06/11/1997 – Bottled 07/2013. First Fill Bourbon Cask # 8568. 58,1%.

This one is from a distillery which is rather unknown for the big audience, you might have heard of it but it’s not the Glenlivet you know. Glenburgie (home of Ballantine’s) is located in the northern part of the Speyside, between the cities of Elgin and Forres. Glenburgie as a single malt is almost a rarity because a fair amount of their output goes into blends. Elgin-based Gordon & MacPhail has bottled a major part of the indie Glenburgie bottlings, other significant GB bottlers are Signatory and Scotch Malt Whisky Association.

Hopefully this is pleasing ‘cause I’m losing my Glenburgie virginity here, so fingers crossed.

Color: Gold, liquid sunshine.

Nose: Sweet’n’ fruity, home-made apple compote with vanilla ice cream plus some grassy notes.

Palate: Oily and creamy in texture. Really sharp, fresh and vibrant. Needs a drop of water to fully open up. I must say that this is from one excellent cask; the wood gives notes of fresh oak, strong bourbon, coconut and cinnamon. What else? Scottish tea biscuits, butterscotch, crushed almonds. From the garden: yellow fruits, fruit salad with freshly chopped mint & squeezed lemon. I also get a scent of very faint smokiness in the distance.

Finish: Long with notes of mint-infused honey, oak & coconut. I have a habit to nose the empty glass on the following day – Sniff: Strong honey.

Fresh is the key word here, excellent stuff from a superb cask, job well done. Whisky for the summertime… …or any time.

El whisky de esta vez es de una destilería menos conocida por el gran público, a lo mejor has oído de ella pero no es el Glenlivet que conoces. Glenburgie (de aquí viene Ballantine’s) está en el norte de Speyside, entre las ciudades de Elgin y Forres. Un Glenburgie de malta única es casi una rareza porque la mayor parte de su producción es usado para hacer mezclas. Gordon & MacPhail, que tiene su sede en Elgin, ha embotellado la mayoría de los embotellamientos independientes de Glenburgie, otras embotelladoras importantes de GB son Signatory y Scotch Malt Whisky Association.

Ojalá sea agradable porque estoy perdiendo mi Glenburgie virginidad aquí, crucemos los dedos.

Color: Oro, luz de sol liquido. 

Nariz: Dulce y afrutado, compota casera de manzana con helado de vainilla y unas notas herbosas.

Paladar: Textura aceitosa y cremosa. Muy ácido, fresco y dinámico. Necesita una gota de agua para realmente abrirse. Tengo que decir que de verdad viene de un barril estupendo; la madera le da unas notas de roble fresco, bourbon fuerte, coco y canela. ¿Qué más? Una galletas de té escocesas, butterscotch, almendras molidas. Del huerto: frutas amarillas, ensalada de fruta con menta fresca & limón. También noto una aroma de humo muy ligero en la distancia.

Final: Largo con notas de miel y menta, roble & coco. Tengo la costumbre de oler la copa vacia al día siguiente – Resultado: fuerte miel.

Fresco es la palabra clave aquí, un whisky estupendo de un barril magnífico, un trabajo bien hecho. Un whisky para el verano…  o para cualquier época del año.

Highland Park Loki,15 Year Old,Valhalla Collection, (21 000 bottles, aged in Spanish sherry casks & heavily peated casks). 48.7%.

The Nordic god Loki as some people claim was a God of Fire and was the son of two giants.
A shape-shifter who appears in the form of a salmon, a horse, a seal and a fly, Loki is traditionally a troublemaker of the highest order.

This is the second entry in Highland Park's Valhalla Collection. Loki comes housed in the same wooden frame as Thor, which was the first entry in this collection.


Nose: Honey, orange peel, sour, quite powerful smoke, in the end wet gravel.

Palate: Intensively sweet and sour, complex, smoke, salt, huge amount of honey, black pepper, lemon peel, orange,vanilla, camomile, coconut milk, mineral.

Finish: Long and salty, lots of honey, very waxy. This malt sticks to your tongue.

Very powerful and intense HP. I think this whisky is better than the first entry (Thor) in the Valhalla collection, altough Thor was also very good IMHO. Loki has some similarities to the official Highland Park 30 yo because of its powerful honey character.

Great whisky, but the price... well, it's a matter of opinion.. ;)

Highland Park Loki,15 Year Old,Valhalla Collection, (21 000 botellas, madurado en barriles de jerez español & barriles de intensa turba). 48,7%.


El dios nórdico Loki fue, dicen algunos, un Dios del Fuego y un hijo de dos gigantes.
Un cambiante de forma que aparece en la forma de un salmón, un caballo, una foca o una mosca, Loki es tradicionalmente un alborotador de primera clase.

Esta es la segunda entrada en la colección Valhalla de Highland Park. Loki es vendido en una caja de madera similar a la de Thor, la primera entrada en esta colección.

Nariz: Miel, cáscara de naranja, amargo, humo bastante fuerte, finalmente gravilla mojada.

Paladar: Agridulzura intensa, complejo, humo, sal, una cantidad enorme de miel, pimienta negra, cáscara de limón, naranja, vainilla, infusión de manzanilla, leche de coco, mineral.

Final: Largo y salado, mucha miel, muy ceroso.El sabor de esta malta te permanece en la boca durante mucho tiempo.

Un Highland Park muy fuerte e intenso. Pienso que este whisky es mejor que la primera entrada (Thor) en la colección Valhalla, aunque Thor también fue muy rico, en mi humilde opinión. En Loki hay algo parecido al oficial Highland Park de 30 años, creo que es porque tiene tanta miel en su carácter.  

Un whisky estupendo, pero su precio... es cuestión de opinión..  ;)
