Bowmore 22 yo, A.D.Rattray. 46%.

Another Bowmore – I purchased this miniatyre a year ago in a little Bayerish whisky retailer. It was bottled by the shop itself, so all the details are seen on the handwritten label (as seen in the picture).

Color: Straw

Nose: The first impression is a very creamy barbeque smoke which is almost all there is to offer;  I think this one must breath for quite a while in a Glencairn. After fifteen minutes emerges juicy fruitiness, yellow that is.  Altogether the nose is quite shy but a very pleasant one.

Palate: Medium bodied.  Lemon through smoke and fire. Wet wool.  Very sweet and lemony, almost like a lemon cheesecake. Then comes quite loudly one of the Bowmore’s trademarks, not the lavender but black currant, and it freshens the palate in a nice manner. Cold ashes and some minerality such as wet gravel and limestone.

Finish: Bitter sweet;  apple compote and grapefruit with some icing sugar. Fairly long.

Summarily - Good stuff.

Otro Bowmore – lo compré hace un año en una pequeña tienda de whisky en Baviera, Alemania. Ésta miniatura fue embotellado por la tienda así que se pueden ver todos los detalles en la etiqueta escrito a mano (ver la foto).

Color: Paja.

Nariz: La primera impresión y casi la única cosa que ofrece es un humo muy cremoso de parrilla; pienso que este whisky tiene que respirar bastante tiempo en un Glencairn. Después de quince minutos aparece un olor de frutas jugosas, o sea frutas amarillas. En total la nariz es bastante tímida pero una muy placentera.

Paladar: De cuerpo medio. Limón a través de humo y fuego. Lana empapada. Muy dulce y con sabor a limón, casi como la tarta de queso de limón. Luego emerge bastante fuertemente una de las características de Bowmore, no la lavanda pero la grosella negra, y eso refresca el paladar de una manera agradable. Cenizas frias y un poco de sabor a minerales como gravilla mojada y piedra caliza.

Final: Agridulce; compota de manzana, pomelo con un poco de azúcar glasé. Bastante largo.

En pocas palabras: un buen producto.

Benriach 1990, 22 Year Old, Tawny Port Finish, Port Pipe, Cask #2596, Batch #9, 624 bottles, Distilled 24.1.1990, Bottled 7/2012, 53,4%.

Nose: A basketful of green apples, apple jam, dry apple cider. Hint of cranberries. Cherry liqueur (Kirsberry). 

Palate: Quite sweet. Again apples, this time red ones. Coconut cream. Hint of smoke. A little bit vinous, fairly sharp and tannic. Let it breath in the glass and more sweetness comes out in the form of icing sugar. I think it needs more complexity to the body, now it is a little bit dull.

Finish: Peeled almonds. Lingonberries, ripe raspberries. Dries rather quickly.

I reviewed back in May another port finished Benriach Benriach/1994/18yo/Peated Tawny Port, 53,4% which turned out be a little bit disappointing, mainly due to the weak / short finish.

This 22-year-old is not peated, which serves this spirit better when it comes to the port finishes. However, it has something in it that doesn't function too well for me - maybe the palate is too acidic/tannic -the balance is a little bit off, so to speak. Not an unpleasant dram at all but Benriach can do so much better, and luckily there is no shortage of Benriach bottlings out there.  ;).

Benriach 1990, 22 años, Acabado de Tawny Port, Port Pipe, Barrica #2596, Lote #9, 624 botellas, Destilado 24.1.1990, Embotellado 7/2012, 53,4%.

Nariz: Una cesta de manzanas verdes, mermelada de manzana, sidra seca de manzana. Un toque de arándano. Licor de cereza (Kirsberry).

Paladar: Bastante dulce. Otra vez manzanas, unas rojas esta vez. Leche de coco. Un toque de humo. Un poco vinoso, bastante ácido y tanino. Déjalo respirar un poco en la copa y eso le lleva más dulzura en la forma de azúcar glasé. A mí me parece que necesita más complejidad en su cuerpo, ahora es un poco soso.

Final: Almendras peladas. Arándanos rojos, frambuesas maduras. Seca bastante rápidamente.

En mayo hice una cata de un otro Benriach con acabado de port Benriach /1994/18 yo/ Peated Tawny Port, 53,4% y resultó ser un poco decepcionante, mayormente debido a su acabado débil / corto.

Este de 22 años no tiene turba y eso sirve mejor este espíritu (spirit) cuando hablamos de acabados de port. Sin embargo, tiene algo que no funciona muy bien para mí - a lo mejor el paladar es demasiado ácido/tanino - el equilibrio no está bien, por decirlo así. No es una copita mal en absoluto pero Benriach puede hacerlo tanto mejor, y afortunadamente no hay escasez de embotellamientos de Benriach en la venta.  ;)
