Redbreast 15 yo, 46%, (matured in Bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks)

As it’s St.Patrick's day, I thinks it’s appropriate to have a dram from the Emerald Isles today. As the Redbreast is on of my absolute favorite Irish whiskey brands out there, it is a no brainer for me to pour a glass of something from the Redbreast range of the Midleton distillery. Almost every whisky connoissuer in the world is more than likely familiar with the 12 yo Redbreast, so I decided to go with the 15 yo version of the range.

Color: Pale copper.

Nose: Mint chocolate and nutty dry Oloroso. This is something rather different comparing to the 12 yo RB. The sherry character is kind of old-school type of sherry – it’s more nutty and leathery than for example the soaked raisins / sultana type of aroma which you’ll find in the 12 yo RB. The spicy potstill characteristic goes hand in hand with good quality toasted oak aromas. Great nose indeed. Oh! I almost forgot: a hint of Leprechaun. 

Nosing this dram reminds me a of one fond experience from past; A few years ago I paid a visit with my lovely wife to the Bushmills distillery in the Northern Ireland. In the distillery tour there was a chance to nose an empty cask which was earlier filled with 10 yo Bushmills whiskey, the cask has been emptied several years ago. The nose was as vibrant as the cask would have been emptied last week, it was amazing how the aromas were still so strong after being empty for all those years. The reason I’m telling this story is that the smell was quite close to this 15 yo Redbreast, except some sweetness.

Palate: Whisky fudge, brown sugar. Brown worn out leather jacket or should I say a shoe polish. A hint of liquorice in the middle. Sweet figs dusted with cocoa powder. Dried red berries such as cranberries.  Around the palate there is hovering this beautiful aromatic toasted oak scent which I think is the backbone to the whole experience here. 

Finish: Minty & tannic. Gets spicier towards the end.

I must say that you cannot go wrong with the Redbreast, it’s always a delight to sip a quality dram, no matter what.

Dailuaine aged 8 years. Hepburn’s Choice. Distilled in 2007. Bottled by Langside distillers. Single cask. 46 %

Let’s start the new year 2021 in this blog by a Speysider youngster. I bought this tiny bottle a couple of years ago in the Drinkmonger in Pitlochry Scotland just out of curiosity. 

Colour: Gold (the label of the bottle states not colored). 

Nose: Fruity with hint of smoke & wet cardboard. Some fresh pineapple and vanilla. Overall the nose is fairly green, it feels almost like a tequila in some sense, if you know what I mean.

Palate: Nice mouth-coating oily texture. Bittersweet with notes of ginger, mixed herbs, bourbon wood and ripe sweet mango. Hint of smoke and vanilla & dried spices - it is also a little bit metallic, especially in the finish. It’s funny that in the palate there’s also something that reminds me of tequila.

Finish: Grassy and slightly metallic. Short.

Verdict: Mediocre easy drinking stuff with no obvious faults. A summery dram for a holiday in Mexico. Vamos a la playa!

Glenfarclas 2000 Premium Vintage edition, 15 yo. 46%. 9 000 bottles.

So, this one is a millennium vintage distillate, bottled for the German market after spending approximately 15 years in oloroso sherry casks. 

Color: Light amber. 

Nose: Sherry monster? Nah, the arrival is fairly soft and mellow - this is gentle stuff. Demerara sugar and nutty dry Jerez oloroso sherry. Caramel on a toasted bread. A whisper of curry powder. Raisins with sweet malted barley.

Palate: Semi-sweet arrival. Oloroso sherry for sure. A hint of metal spoon. Some nuts with skin. Spices show up towards the middle. A small bite of Christmas cake. I think this whisky was bottled at perfect strength, so adding water would be a waste of time (and whisky).

Finish: Dried herbs & demerara sugar. 

An easy after dinner sipper from the green meadows. Don’t bother if you’re yearning for a huge sherry bomb.

Glenfarclas 2000 edición Premium Vintage, 15 años. 46 %. 9 000 botellas.

Se trata de un destilado del año 2000, embotellado para el mercado alemán después de estar aproximadamente 15 años en barricas de jerez oloroso.

Color: Ámbar claro.

Nariz: ¿Un monstruo de jerez? No, primero está bastante suave y delicado – es una copa agradable. Azúcar moreno con seco jerez oloroso y nueces. Caramelo sobre pan tostado. Un susurro de curry. Pasas con cebada malteada dulce.

Paladar: Primero está semidulce. Claramente jerez oloroso. Un poco de sabor de una cuchara metálica. Un toque de nueces con piel. Especias aparecen hacia el medio. Un trocito de tarta de navidad. Creo que este whisky está embotellado en potencia perfecta, así que añadir agua sería una pérdida de tiempo (y del whisky).

Final: Hierbas desecadas & azúcar moreno.

Un fácil trago desde las verdes prados para disfrutar después de cenar. No vale la pena si estás buscando una enorme bomba de jerez.

Mortlach 1990 The Ultimate. Distilled 12/09/90, bottled 15/01/10. Matured in a sherry butt for 19 years. 733 bottles. Cask no: 5963. 46%

From the whisky capital of the world comes today’s dram. Johnnie Walker enthusiasts should know that Mortlach is the key component in most of the J.W. bottlings and if you have done your homework, you ought to know that Mortlach was the first distillery in Dufftown (established in 1823).

The Dutch independent bottler, The Ultimate Whisky Company is a quite good pick, in case you are on a low budget and yearning to purchase especially a bottle of single cask Scotch whisky – the TUWC has quite a vast variety of single casks from different distilleries to choose from. I bought this bottle from a Berliner whisky retailer for a very reasonable price a few years back. Let’s see if this was a real bargain or not.

Color: Fino sherry. Color reveals the fact that we are talkin’ about a second or even a fourth fill sherry butt here.

Nose: A cloud of sulphur which disappears very quickly, never to return. Tart with loads of cooked fruits and some fresh apple – it reminds me of the odor that hits you at the distillery when you enter the mash room. After a while oak enters the stage, with some sawdust on the solders. Distinctive notes of fennel seeds or if you’re in Turkey, a sprinkle of raki.

Palate: Nicely fat and oily texture with very sharp and acrid / citric notes. Barley sugars and soft sherry notes balance the palate into the right direction. Towards the end some herb infused honey. As the label says, this is matured in a sherry butt for nearly two decades… In a blind taste I would go terribly wrong with this one, my guess would be more like bourbon maturation with a sherry finish.

Finish: Fairly short with some ginger and honey.

A pretty healthy bottling - no flaws detected, yet nothing triumphant either. Neverthless good value for your money.

Mortlach 1990 The Ultimate. Destilado 12/09/90, embotellado 15/01/10. Madurado en un barril de jerez durante 19 años. 733 botellas. Barril no: 5963. 46%

La copita de hoy viene de la capital mundial de whisky. Los aficionados de Johnnie Walker sabrán que Mortlach es la parte clave de mayor parte de los embotellamientos Johnnie Walker y si han hecho sus deberes, deberían saber que Mortlach fue la primera destilería en Dufftown (fundada en 1823).

La embotelladora independiente holandesa, The Ultimate Whisky Company, es una buena alternativa especialmente si está en busca de un whisky single cask de Escocia con un precio competitivo – el TUWC tiene un amplio surtido de whiskies single cask de diferentes destilerías para elegir. Compré esta botella en una tienda de whiskies en Berlin hace unos años a un precio razonable. Vamos a ver si era una ganga o no.

Color: Jerez Fino. El color revela el hecho de que estamos hablando de un barril de jerez de segundo o hasta cuarta uso.
Nariz: Una nube de azufre que desaparece pronto y nunca vuelve. Ácido con mucha fruta cocinada y un poco de manzana fresca – me hace pensar en el olor que hay en la puerta al entrar en una sala de maceración.  Después de un rato aparece roble con un poco de aserrín. Distintivas notas de semillas de hinojo o si estás en Turquía, de raki.

Paladar: Tiene una agradable textura gruesa y aceitosa con notas muy ácidas y cítricas. Azúcares de cebada y suaves notas de jerez hacen que el paladar adquiera más equilibrio. Hacia el final hay un poco de miel con hierbas. Como se pone en la etiqueta, está madurado en un barril de jerez durante casi dos décadas… en una prueba “en ciegas” yo me habría equivocado terriblemente con este whisky, probablemente habría adivinado que se trata de un whisky madurado en bourbon con un acabado de jerez.

Final: Bastante corto con un poco de jengibre y miel.

Un embotellamiento bastante sano – no tiene ningunos defectos, pero no hay nada triunfante tampoco. En todo caso, tiene una buena relación calidad-precio.

Millstone 12 yo Sherry Cask. Zuidam Distillers. Dutch Single Malt Whisky, 46%. Millstone 5 yo. Zuidam Distillers. Dutch Single Malt Whisky 40%

It’s been quite a while since my last update – sorry about that. I have a new job that has pretty much drained all my energy, and now that things have settled down a bit, my focus is back on the nectar of gods, hallelujah!

Two Dutch whiskies in the glass, the younger one is matured for 5 years in both first-fill new American oak and first-refill bourbon barrels and the older one is matured first for 8 years in American oak and then for 4 years in Oloroso casks. As you can see in the distillery’s website , whisky is not the only spirit they distill.

Fast rewind to last autumn - I was in Eindhoven, Netherlands and (luckily) had a chance to visit to a local liquor store. One shelf was dedicated to local products and my eyes caught these distinctive whisky bottles from the Zuidam Distillery.  The owner of the shop kindly offered my brother and I a couple of tasty drams from these bottles (in Finland we have very strict and silly alcohol laws  and it would be utterly impossible and illegal to be offered a sample in our liquor stores…) – Millstone 100 Rye Whisky and Millstone 12 yo Sherry Cask, in this particular order. Both of them turned out to be quite excellent bottlings – in fact so excellent that after returning back to our homeland, I simply had to place an order for a bottle of the Millstone 12 yo Sherry Cask (there was not enough space in my luggage back in Holland).  


Millstone Aged 5 years, Zuidam Distillers. Dutch Single Malt Whisky. Matured in bourbon and oloroso casks. 40 %

Color: Pale gold with a bronze hue.

Nose: Very nutty at first, loads of different kind of nuts, walnuts on the top. Some fresh notes of juicy and crispy red apples with ripe banana. Some hay and freshly cut grass. 

Palate: Partly due to the low ABV, the body is quite thin. Semi-sweet arrival with notes of walnuts, coconut and fresh oak. Fresh green apples and ginger, lightly seasoned with pepper mixture. Some distant floral notes. The balance is good in this summery dram.

Finish: White pepper leads the way to the semi-short and a little watery finish.

In a nutshell - an easy-going whisky for the mellow summer nights.


Millstone 12 yo Sherry Cask, Zuidam Distillers. Dutch Single Malt Whisky. Distillation date: 25.10.01. Bottling date: 26.1.15, Cask type: Oloroso.  46%

Color : Amber.

Nose: Pedro Ximenez sherry - although there are no PX casks involved in this bottling. Andalucian sherry bodega warehouse in mid-July.  Tons of fresh juicy sultanas, Indonesian sweet soya sauce, dark sesame oil. Mixture of roasted nuts and dried fruits. Just a tiny hint of rubber. Extremely inviting and delicious. Yummy.

Palate: Full-bodied, thick and concentrated. Semi-sweet with notes of bitter oranges and sweet blood oranges. A cup full of raisins soaked in good balsamic vinegar. Vanilla ice cream dusted with cocoa powder. Mouthful of dried fruits with chips of dark 80% chocolate. Faint smoke in the background adds a little drama into the experience. Perfect drinking strength at 46%. In perfect balance, I do not dare to add any water not to spoil the party.

Finish: At the long finish cocoa beans with roasted expresso and liquorice.

An extremely well executed sherry beast - a true winter warmer.

If you’re into sherried drams, I dare you to buy a bottle of the 12 yo sherry cask and you’ll be astonished.

I’m very pleased with the fact that continental European distilleries can nowadays produce such high quality drams.  The Zuidam distillery being a good example – a distillery to be reckoned with. Do not underestimate these producers until you have a taste of their produce.

Ha pasado bastante tiempo de mi última publicación - lo siento. He cambiado de trabajo y eso me ha consumido casi toda la energía pero ahora que ya me he acostumbrado, otra vez puedo concentrarme en otras cosas también, como el néctar de los dioses, ¡aleluya!

Hoy tengo en la cata dos copas de whisky holandés. Otro (más jovén) está madurado durante 5 años en nuevos barriles de roble americano de primer uso y también en barriles de bourbon de segundo uso. El otro (más viejo) en su parte está madurado durante 8 años en roble americano y durante 4 años en barriles de oloroso. Como se puede leer en la página web de la destilería, el whisky no es la única bebida espirituosa que destilan.

El pasado otoño estuve en Eindhoven, Holanda y (afortunadamente) tuve la oportunidad de visitar una tienda local de licores. Una parte de la tienda estaba dedicado a productos locales e inmediatamente me dio cuenta de unas botellas distintivas de la destilería Zuidam. El dueño de la tienda nos ofreció unas deliciosas muestras a mi hermano y yo (en Finlandia tenemos unas leyes muy estrictas y tontas en relación a alcohol y sería totalmente imposible e ilegal de recibir muestras en una licorería en nuestro país…) de botellas de Millstone 100 Rye Whisky y Millstone 12 años Sherry Cask, en este orden particular. Ambos resultaron unos embotellamientos excelentes – en efecto tan excelentes que una vez en casa, simplemente tuve que hacer un pedido del Millstone 12 años Sherry Cask (no tuve suficiente espacio en la maleta en Holanda para comprar una botella allí).


Millstone Añejado 5 años, destilería Zuidam. Whisky de malta única holandés. Madurado en barriles de bourbon y oloroso. 40 %

Color: Oro pálido con un matiz bronceado.

Nariz: Primero hay olor a nuez. Algunas notas de jugosas y crujientes manzanas rojas con plátano maduro. Heno y césped recién cortado.

Paladar: Parcialmente debido al bajo ABV, el cuerpo es bastante fino. Primero está semi dulce con notas de nueces, coco y fresco roble. Frescas manzanas verdes y jengibre, ligeramente especiados con mixtura de pimienta. Lejanas notas florales. Esta copa veraniega tiene un equilibrio muy buena.

Final: Pimienta blanca sirve de guía al final que es de largo medio y un poco aguado.

En pocas palabras – un whisky fácil para las suaves noches de verano.


Millstone 12 años Sherry Cask. Destilería  Zuidam. Un whisky de malta única holandés. Destilado 25.10.2001, embotellado 26.1.2015. Tipo de barril: Oloroso. 46 %

Color: Ámbar.

Nariz: Jerez Pedro Ximenez – aunque barriles de PX no se han usado con este embotellamiento. Hay un olor de una bodega de jerez andaluza a mediados de julio. Muchísimas frescas y jugosas sultanas, salsa se soja dulce indonesia, aceite de sésamo. Una mixtura de nueces tostadas y frutos secos. Un ligero toque de goma. Extremadamente tentador y delicioso. Rico.

Paladar: Con mucho cuerpo, grueso y concentrado. Semi dulce con notas de naranjas amargas y naranjas de sangre dulces. Una taza de sultanas marinadas en buen vinagre balsámico. Helado de vainilla con un poco de cacao en polvo encima. Un bocado de frutas secadas con un poco de chocolate de 80 %. Ligero humo en el fondo añade un poco de drama en la experiencia. Perfecto para beber puro en el 46 %. Tiene  equilibrio perfecto así que no me atrevo añadirle nada de agua para no arruinar la fiesta.

Final: En el final largo hay olor de granos de cacao con café exprés tostado y regaliz.

Un whisky de jerez extremadamente bien ejecutado - un verdadero calentador de invierno.  

Si te gustan los whiskies madurados en barriles de jerez, te desafío a comprar una botella de lo de 12 años y estarás asombrado.

Estoy muy contento con el hecho de que hoy en día en Europa continental haya destilerías que pueden hacer whisky de tan alta calidad. La destilería Zuidam es un buen ejemplo – una destilería para tomar en cuenta. No menosprecies estas destilerías antes de probar sus productos.

Two whiskeys in one post. Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey. Rum cask finished. 6/2015, 46% - Teeling 2002 Single Port Cask Irish Whiskey. Cask No. 905. Filled 02/2002 – Bottled 08/2015. 13 years old. 54,2 %

Two Teelings in one post, usually I review just one whisk(e)y at a time but let the exception prove the rule in this case. The Teeling Whiskey Distillery is the first new distillery in Dublin in over 125 years and the only operational distillery in the city of Dublin. Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey. Rum cask finished. 6/2015, 46%

Color: Pale gold.

Nose: Yellow gentle fruitiness (ripe fruits). Orange peel and vanilla sticks with mellow spices - from India perhaps.  Water is not obligatory here but if you dare to add some, you’ll find more fruits, especially pear.

Palate: Well, obviously very Irish (in a good way). The texture is very creamy and oily, I presume the no chill filtration and the 46 % ABV have something to do with it. Nice thick notes of butterscotch with tickling spiciness, or should I say toffee in this context?? Cinnamon flavored cream with a splash of squeezed orange and pear. Oak is there also, yes. With a few drops of water: more spices plus canned fruit cocktail. Hey, I almost forgot that this one is finished in rum casks – do I detect any rum? …maybe some demerara sugar?

Finish: Medium long with notes of dark 80 % chocolate & cinnamon.

Teeling 2002 Single Port Cask Irish Whiskey. Cask No. 905. Filled 02/2002 – Bottled 08/2015. 13 years old. 54,2 %
Color: Lagoon sunset (never been there though).

Nose: Very calm at first - needs some time to breath to fully open up. After fifteen minutes; characteristic Irish notes, certain type of esters that are familiar with whiskeys from the Emerald Isle. Typical portwood notes of raspberries and strawberry jam. Vanilla ice cream on toasted bread. Honeydew and melon. In a way the nose is quite summery.

Palate: Much more going on comparing with the rum cask version - well, this is bottled at cask strength and drawn from a single (port) cask, so I presume it’s self-explanatory …or not. Extremely sweet at arrival, overall nice oily and thick concistency.  Strawberry and raspberry jam. Also some varnish plus nice nippy tannins. There is more oak on the palate, as this is propably double of age in contrast to the whiskey above – it’s still not old though, as you can notice. With water: I can’t pinpoint excatly what, but some floral notes come out with wild strawberries followed by some exotic fruits. And since we are talking about port cask maturation; aged portwine and juicy melon.

Finish: Fudgy and long.

Can’t complain, two proper whiskeys - one as an appetizer, another as a dessert

TEELING & TEELING

Dos Teelings en una cata, normalmente solamente cato un whisky a la vez pero vamos a dejar la excepción confirma la regla esta vez. La destilería Teeling Whiskey es la primera nueva destilería en Dublin en 125 años y la única en operación en la ciudad de Dublin. Si quieres más información, chequea el enlace de Teeling abajo.

Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey. Acabado en barriles de ron. 6/2015, 46 %

Color: Oro pálido.

Nariz: Suaves frutas amarillas (frutas maduras). Cáscara de naranja y vainilla con suaves especias – desde la India a lo mejor. Agua no es obligatorio aquí pero si te atreves añadirle un poco, encontrarás más frutas, especialmente pera.

Paladar: Pues, obviamente muy irlandés (en una buena manera). La textura es muy cremosa y aceitosa, creo que tiene algo que ver con la no-filtración en frío y su ABV de 46 %. Agradables y fuertes notas de butterscotch con especias picantes, ¿o debería llamarlo toffee en este contexto? Hay nata con sabor a canela con un toque de naranja y pera. También hay roble, sí. Con unas gotas de agua: más especias y ensalada de fruta en lata. Hey, por poco me olvido de que ha sido acabado en barriles de ron - ¿puedo notar algo de ron? …a lo mejor azúcar moreno?

Final: De largo medio con unas notas de chocolate de 80 % y canela.

Teeling 2002 Single Port Cask Irish Whiskey. Barril no. 905. Destilado 02/2002 – embotellado 08/2015. 13 años. 54,2 %
Color: Puesta del sol en una laguna (aunque nunca he estado).

Nariz: Muy tranquilo primero – necesita un poco de tiempo de respirar para abrirse de verdad. Después de quinze minutos: características notas irlandesas, un cierto tipo de ésters que son conocidos con los whiskeys de la Isla Esmeralda. Notas tipicales de madera de oporto – frambuesas y mermelada de fresa. Helado de vainilla sobre pan tostado. Melón chino y sandía. De alguna manera la nariz es muy veraniego.

Paladar: Hay muchas más cosas comparado con la versión madurado en barriles de ron – pues, este es embotellado en ”cask strength” y viene de un solo barril (de oporto), creo que eso lo explica.. o no. Primero es extremadamente dulce, tiene una agradable consistencia cremosa y espesa. Mermelada de fresa y frambuesas. También hay barniz y picantes taninos. Hay más roble en el paladar, es que probablemente tiene doble de edad comparado con el whiskey anterior – aunque tampoco es viejo, como puedes notar. Con agua: No puedo precisarlo pero algunas notas florales aparecen con fresas silvestres seguidas de unas frutas exóticas. Y como estamos hablando de un whiskey que ha sido madurado en barriles de oporto: hay vino de oporto añejado y jugosa sandía. 

Final: Fudge. Largo.

No puedo quejarme, son dos whiskeys dignos - uno como un aperitivo y otro como un postre.
