Elements of Islay LG3. Bottled in 2011, 55,9%

I don’t think it’s necessary to go too deep into trivia about these Elements of Islay bottlings. If you’re into whisky, you’ve probably tasted at least one of these EoI bottlings. To find out more details, go to the islay.com.

LG stands for Lagavulin and 3 is the third version of this NAS Laga. So let’s have a go:

Color: Pale white wine. 

Nose: Ah - huge peat smoke, under the smoke nice n’ juicy yellow fruitiness. Then there’s something that you won’t find in old Islayers - a hint of wet cardboard. I think this dram is propably closer to five than ten years old. Typical notes of bourbon matured Lagavulin - fennel seeds with a splash of lemon, it brings to my mind the official Lagavulin 12 yo Cask strength. Tarry railroad at the harbour in summer heat. With water  – sweaty (white) gymsocks, wet gravel, some pastis and vegetal peat.

Palate: Fairly hot at full proof, salt and liquorice, salmiak and lemon. It is firm and oily in structure. Balance is there at cask strenght, but you’re fool if you don’t add some water. With water: Still quite austere, mashed potatoes with lemon squeeze and salt. More sweetness comes through also.

 

Finish: Salmiak, fading bonfire after summer rain.

Plain and simple yet so delightful – a dram for the outdoors.

No creo que sea necesario entrar en trivialidades sobre los embotellados Elements of Islay. Si eres un aficionado de whisky, habrás probado por lo menos uno de los embotellados EoI. Para saber más, entra en islay.com. 

El LG significa Lagavulin y el 3 que se trata de la tercera versión
de este Lagavulin NAS. Así que vamos a ver: 

Color: Vino blanco pálido. 

 

Nariz: Ah – muchísimo humo de turba. Debajo del humo agradables y jugosas notas de frutas amarillas. Luego hay algo que no puedes encontrar en un viejo Islayer – un toque de cartón mojado. Creo que estamos hablando de un whisky que tiene mejor 5 que 10 años. Notas tipicales de un Lagavulin madurado en barriles de bourbon – hinojo con un poco de limón, me hace pensar en el oficial embotellado de Lagavulin de 12 años cask strength. Vía ferrea cubierta de alquitrán junto a un puerto en el calor veraniego. Con agua – unos calcetines (blancos) sudorosos, gravilla mojada, un poco de pastis y turba vegetal.

Paladar: Bastante caliente como puro, sal y regaliz, salmiak y limón. Su estructura es firme y aceitosa. Como puro tiene equilibrio, pero eres un tonto si no añades un poco de agua. Con agua: todavía un poco severo, puré de patata con limón y sal. Más dulzura aparece también.

Final: Salmiak, una hoguera apagandose después de una lluvia veraniega.

Sencillo y simple pero muy encantador – una copita para disfrutar al aire libre.

CI5 (Caol Ila) Elements of Islay. Speciality Drinks Ltd. Bottled 2012. 58,3%.

Elements of Islay is a range of single malts from the Isle of Islay - all nine Islay distilleries are included in these Speciality Drinks Ltd bottlings, even Port Ellen. Though there is no specific distillery mentioned on the bottles, you don’t have to be a Sherlock to figure out which distillery is in question when the distillery symbol on the label states Ar, Lg, Pe and so on. These bottlings come in batches, each batch is blended from 2 (in the case of Port Ellen - a wild guess) to 50 casks from a single distillery, varying whiskies of different ages. According to the Whisky Exchange, the CI5 is originally released as a Scandinavian travel retail exclusive.

Color: Straw / white wine.

Nose: Elements of Islay; a stellar combination of tar, briny sea air, peat. Heavily integrated smoke, cold ash, ashtray, sweet barley sugar and fresh butter. Plain and simple but so good – you could start your every single morning just by sniffing this.

Palate: Sweet smoke at arrival, medium bodied. Salmiak, lemon and, as expected, some briny notes.  Sugared almonds & smoked limoncello - well, there is no such thing but you get the picture. Also a little bit of tannic notes. Hard to pinpoint but some aromatic herbs – a hybrid of thyme and sage I guess… Needs a good splash of water, it adds liquorice and sugary notes and more limoncello. The next morning the empty glass smells of smoke infused honey.

Finish: Not very long. Peat, herbs & polished metal.

A classic well balanced Caol Ila. I think Caol Ila is like AC/DC; it’s a no-brainer - you know what to expect and usually you don’t get a disappointment. Although I don’t give any points to the whiskies in my blog, however I still give extra points for the smart and distinctive pharmacy bottle design.

Interesting trivia: Over 170 independent bottlers have had Caol Ila in their catalogues, so if your aim is to collect a complete Caol Ila collection, good luck. ;)

Elements of Islay es una selección de single malts de la Isla de Islay – las nueve destilerías de Islay están entre estos embotellados de Speciality Drinks Ltd, hasta Port Ellen. Aunque sobre las botellas no se menciona ningún destilería, no tienes que ser muy listo para adivinar de qué destilería se trata porque en las etiquetas hay símbolos de las destilerías como Ar, Lg, Pe etc. Estos embotellados los producen en lotes, cada lote es una mezcla de dos (en el caso de Port Ellen, creo) a 50 barriles de una sola destilería, variando whiskies de diferentes edades. Según el Whisky Exchange, el CI5 está originalmente lanzado exclusivamente al mercado de travel retail de Escandinavia.

Color: Paja / vino blanco.

Nariz: Elementos de Islay; una excelente combinación de brea, aire de mar salado, turba. Humo fuertemente integrado, cenizas frías, cenicero, azúcar de cebada, mantequilla fresca. Simple y sencillo pero muy bueno - se podría empezar cada día de la vida oliendo esto.

Paladar: Humo dulce al principio, de cuerpo medio. Salmiak, limón y, como era de esperar, unas notas salobres. Almendras azucaradas & limoncello ahumado - lo sé que no existe un producto así pero puedes imaginarlo. También hay unas notas de tanino. Es difícil precisarlo, pero hay unas hierbas aromáticas - creo que sería algún tipo de híbrido de tomillo y salvia… Necesita unas gotas de agua, eso le añade sabor de regaliz y notas de azucar y aun más limoncello. En la mañana siguiente en la copa vacía se puede oler miel ahumada. 

Final: No muy largo. Turba, hierbas y metal pulido.

Un Caol Ila clásico de buen equilibrio. Pienso que Caol Ila es un poco como AC/DC; es pan comido - sabes lo que esperar y normalmente no te llevas una desilusión. Aunque no doy puntos a los whiskies en mi blog, esta vez sin embargo quiero darle puntos extra de su estupendo y distintivo diseño de botella de farmacia.

Una trivialidad interesante: Más de 170 independientes embotelladoras han tenido Caol Ila en sus catálogos, así que si quieres adquirir una collección complete de Caol Ilas, buena suerte.  ;)
