Longrow Cadenhead's Authentic Collection. Distilled 1998, bottled April 2012. 13 years old. Bourbon Hogshead. 306 bottles, 55.0 % Vol.

Expections are always in high altitudes when you crack open a Cadenhead’s bottling from the Springbank distillery. ( …oops, I broke the cork, but no worries, I have a few spares…)

Color: Straw.

Nose: I know, this is from Islay – someone eager might shout in a blind tasting. Barbeque bacon & sweet peat. A bowl of ripe tropical fruits next to a cow stable. Haha!- a hint of Suave hair cream which my dad used to comb into his black hair in my childhood (it is not an unpleasent odor) . Very nice and alluring aromas, so how about the palate?

Palate: First impression - somehow it reminds me of Ardbeg’s Airigh Nam Beist 1990. I cannot pinpoint exactly what it is, but perhabs it is this creamy sweet smokiness that rings the bells.  Gentle sweet’n oily vegetal peat. Mustard oil and salmiac (Turkish pepper, a famous Finnish salmiac sweet), toasted oak with smoked vanilla custard. The balance is spot on as neat. Adding water emhasizes vanilla notes and adds a little chalkiness to the palate. 

Finish: Medium lenght. Dries out to a little chili heat.

As you might know I’ve always been a fan of these pure bourbon matured whiskies and this robust beauty makes absolutely no difference.  Perfect winter warmer as they say.

Longrow Red Australian Shiraz Cask,11 yo,9 000 bottles, 53,7%.

Once again it’s time for a wine treated dram, this one has spent 6 years in bourbon hogsheads and 5 years in Aussie Shiraz casks. What comes to the flavor profile of the Shiraz grapes; mint, spices, chocolate and coffee, soft tannins etc. which are the tastes that you’ll find on the wine, so technically Syrah should be quite a good match with the spirit. Let’s see how the marriage has worked out: 

Color: Copper. 

Nose: Smoked and peated V.S.O.P brandy / Cognac - I wonder if a part of that smoke comes from the Shiraz cask…? Fresh mint leaves, which is quite a dominant factor here. Milk chocolate and red garden berries. Very fresh and elegant in a way.

Palate: Toasted oak, shy smoke. Sweet and spirity. Cocoa beans, mint chocolate, brandy, strawberries. Bitter and sour. Lacks a bit of complexity.

Finish: Charred oak, stable and again: mint chocolate.

Well, a fairly decent dram (in this category), IMHO Shiraz has done a better job than Cabernet Sauvignon  in the RED-series, but still I prefer the old-school bourbon matured Longrows; wine cask maturation sort of masks Longrow’s familiar profile which is kind of a shame and unnecessary.

Longrow Red Australian Shiraz Cask, 11 años, 9 000 botellas, 53,7%.

Una vez más se trata de un trago madurado en barriles de vino, éste en cuestión se ha añejado 6 años en  barriles hogshead de bourbon y 5 años en barriles de shiraz australianos. Hablando de la descripción de sabor de las uvas Shiraz; menta, especias, chocolate y café, taninos suaves etc que son los sabores que se pueden descubrir del vino, así que técnicamente Syrah debería estar una combinación bastante buena con el espíritu. Vamos a ver cómo funciona el matrimonio:

Color: Cobrizo.

Nariz: V.S.O.P. brandy / Coñac ahumado y turboso - me estoy preguntando si ¿una parte de este humo viene de los barriles de Shiraz..? Hojas de menta fresca, lo que es un factor bastante fuerte aquí. Chocolate de leche y bayas rojas de jardin. Muy fresco y elegante de alguna manera.

Paladar: Roble tostado, humo tímido. Dulce y espirituoso. Granos de cacao, chocolate de menta, brandy, fresas. Amargo y ácido. Le falta un poco de complejidad.

Final: Roble carbonizado, establo de caballos y una vez más: chocolate de menta.

Vale, es un trago bastante decente (en esta categoría), en mi humilde opinión el Shiraz ha hecho un mejor trabajo que el Cabernet Sauvignon en la serie-RED (roja), pero aun así prefiero los Longrows de la vieja escuela madurados en barriles de bourbon; la maduración en barriles de vino esconde de alguna manera el perfil conocido de Longrow, lo que es una pena e innecesario.

Longrow Red, Cabernet Sauvignon Cask, Aged 11 Years, 52,1 % (7 years in refill bourbon casks, 4 years in Cabernet Sauvignon Hogsheads).

Nose: Peatsmoke, exhaust fumes. Red berries such as raspberry. Cardboard. Winey and sour.
As could be expected from a Longrow - farmy notes; cow stable. Quite nice.

Palate: German glühwein. Peat/Coal smoke. Cocoa, mocca. Hints of coconut. Notes of liquorice. Slightly metallic. Short and shallow, quite thin in body.

Finish: Medium in lenght. A bit metallic. Tannic and sour. Hints of filter coffee.

Nose is quite promising and therefore the best part of the whisky, unfortunately the palate is slightly too narrow and thin for my tastebuds. Not bad but as Longrow standards a bit of a disappointment, I'm more into their natural products.

Marriage between bourbon and Cabernet - Not excatly a match made in heaven in this case.

Longrow Red, Cabernet Sauvignon barril, Añejado por 11 años, 52,1 % (7 años en barriles de bourbon rellenos, 4 años en barriles Hogshead de Cabernet Sauvignon).

Nariz: Humo de turba, gases de escape. Bayas rojas como frambuesa. Cartón. Vinoso y amargo.Como era de esperar de un Longrow - notas de granja; establo de vacas. Bastante agradable.

Paladar: Glühwein alemano. Humo de turba/brasa. Chocolate, moca. Toques de coco. Notas de regaliz. Un poco metálico. Corto y poco profundo, tiene un cuerpo bastante fino.

Final: De largo medio. Un poco metálico. Con mucho tanino, amargo. Toques de café filtrado.

La nariz es bastante prometedor y por eso es la mejor parte de este whisky, lamentablemente el paladar es un poco demasiado reducido para mis papilas gustativas. No es un mal producto pero un poco decepcionante para ser un Longrow, me gustan más sus productos naturales.

Matrimonio entre bourbon y Cabernet - no es exactamente una pareja perfecta en este caso.

Longrow Rundlets & Kilderkins, , distilled November 2001, bottled January 2013, aged 11 yo.9 000 bottles. 51,7%.

This is the second release in Springbank distillery's Rundlets & Kilderkins series - A peaty Longrow which was matured in 60 and 80 litre casks (Rundlets & Kilderkins), therefore it has had lots of wood contact over the 11 years it has spent in the casks. A little while ago I tasted the Springbank's R&K and liked it quite a lot, so let's see how this cask experiment works with Longrow.

Nose: Hot chocolate, spicy, tarry smoke, tart, red currant, leather jacket, strong oak, something similar to very rich earthy red wine.

Palate: Milk chocolate, mable syrup, ashy tarry smoke, dry spiciness a´la cinnamon, farmy (obvious), sour and crisp.

Finish: Long, very rich, strong and almost tongue numbing cinnamon.

This is one tasty dram but IMHO not as complex as the Springbank's R&K but still really enjoyable. It would be interesting to see other distillers also to do these small cask experiments -  we've already seen "quarter casks" from Laphroaig, Glenfarclas and Ardmore - so who's next? ;)

Longrow Rundlets & Kilderkins, destilado en noviembre de 2001, embotellado en enero de 2013, añejado por 11 años (9 000 botellas). 51,7%.


Este es el segundo lanzamiento en la serie Rundlets & Kilderkins de la destilería Springbank - Un Longrow turboso que ha sido madurado en barriles de 60 y 80 litros (Rundlets & Kilderkins), así que ha tenido mucho contacto con madera durante los 11 años que ha estado en los barriles. Hace un poco caté el R&K de Springbank y me gustó bastante, pues ahora vamos a ver qué tal funciona este experimento con barriles con Longrow.

Nariz: Chocolate caliente, especias, brea vegetal ahumada, ácido, grosella roja, chaqueta de cuero, roble fuerte, un poco similar a un vino tinto muy rico y terroso.

Paladar: Chocolate de leche, jarabe de acre, brea vegetal ahumado con ceniza, especias secos como la canela, granja (obvio), amargo y crujiente.

Final: Largo, muy rico, fuerte, tiene un sabor a canela que casi se te entumece la lengua.


Esta es una copita sabrosa pero en mi humilde opinión no es tan complejo como el R&K de Springbank, pero aún muy placentero. Sería interesante ver otras destilerías también experimentar con estos barriles pequeños - ya hemos visto "cuarter casks" (barriles de cuarto) de Laphroaig, Glenfarclas and Ardmore - ¿quién será el siguiente?  ;)

Longrow 14 yo. The Nectar Belgium, Refill bourbon, bottled 2011. 56,2%.

Let's stay in Campbeltown - this time notes of Springbank distillery's double distilled heavily peated brand Longrow.

Nose: Porridge, lemonade, cow stable, peat, tarry smoke, sweaty gymsocks (yes, really), hints of vanilla, something similar to Ardbeg.

Palate: Quite thick, creamy mouth feel, fairly sweet, peat, lemon juice, oranges, salt, ashy smoke, earthy, a good balance.

Finish: Farmy and gentle ashy smoke in the nose, lemon, sweet and sour. Long.

Great stuff. I love the farminess in this whisky, Islay fanatics would probably love this one. I recommend.

Longrow de 14 años. The Nectar Belgium, refill bourbon, embotellado en 2011. 56,2%.

Vamos a quedarnos en Campbeltown - esta vez impresiones de Longrow, que es la marca doble destilado con intenso turba de destilería Springbank.

Nariz: Gachas de avena, limonada, granja, turba, brea vegetal ahumada, calcetínes de gimnasia sudorosos (sí, de verdad), toques de vainilla, un poco similar a Ardbeg.

Paladar: Bastante espeso, sentido cremoso en boca, bastante dulce, turba, zumo de limón, naranjas, sal, ceniza ahumada, sabor a tierra, buen equilibrio.

Final: Granja, suave ceniza ahumado en la nariz, limón, agridulce, largo en boca.

Un producto excelente. Me gusta mucho la granja en este whisky; a los fanáticos de Islay les encantará este whisky. Recomiendo.
