Highland Park Saint Magnus, 12 years old 2nd Edition. 1998 Vintage, bottled 2010. 11 994 bottles. 55 %

As the header suggests, this is the second release in the Magnus series from the Highland Park, celebrating the Viking history and the Nordic heritage of the Orkney Isles. The other two bottlings in the series were Earl Magnus 15 Year Old 1st Edition and Earl Haakon 18 Year Old 3rd Edition. Saint Magnus (the whisky, not the earl) was mainly matured in sherry seasoned American oak casks along with refill bourbon casks.

Color: Amber.

Nose: Immediately you get sucked into a world of good, old sherry; some spices, cinnamon to start with, then Belgian pralines and full of Jerez oloroso sherry. Tarry smoky notes make it very cozy. Notes of Pedro Ximenez sherry vinegar add some edge and sharpness to the balance. Not forgetting the rain-moistened pebble stones.

Palate: It most certainly delivers all that the nose promises. Big tannins in the front - in other words, it is fairly dry. Full-bodied, cocoa powder and candied orange peel. Oloroso sherry, which turns with time into sweet Pedro Ximenez sherry. Cinnamon with a capital C. Towards the end some lovely salty liquorice. After a good half an hour - railway tracks on a hot summer day (tar), from the horizon carried by the wind, a puff of kiln smoke. Water brings out mixed herbs that add a new dimension to the palate, but still I slightly prefer this one neat.

Finish: Semi dry, long - from a dry, nutty oloroso to a sweet PX.

Quite magnificent oloroso-driven HP. Kudos to Kirkwall!

Como se pone en el encabezado, ésta es la segunda edición en la serie Magnus de Highland Park. La serie celebra la historia de los vikingos y la herencia nórdica de las Islas Órcadas. Las previas ediciones en esta serie fueron Earl Magnus 15 años (primera edición) y Earl Haakon 18 años (tercera edición). Saint Magnus (el whisky, no el conde) fue madurado en mayor parte en barriles de roble americano sazonados de jerez y también en barriles de bourbon recargados.

Color: Ámbar.

Nariz: De inmediato entras en un mundo de buen jerez añejado; algunas notas de especias, al empezar canela, luego pralinés belgas y mucho jerez oloroso. Notas ahumadas de brea lo hacen muy acogedora. Notas de vinagre de jerez PX añaden unos toques punzantes y ácidos en el equilibrio. También hay unas notas de guijarros mojados en la lluvia.


Paladar: Sin duda llega a la altura de las expectativas después de la nariz. Primero hay grandes taninos - en otras palabras, está bastante seco. De mucho cuerpo, cacao en polvo y cáscara de naranja confitada. Jerez oloroso que se transforma con tiempo en dulce jerez Pedro Ximemez. Canela con una mayúscula C. Hacia el final aparece un poco de agradable regaliz salado. Después de una buena media hora – vía férrea en un día caluroso de verano (brea), desde el horizonte llevada por el viento, una nube de humo de kiln. Agua hace que aparezcan hierbas mixtas y eso añade una nueva dimensión al paladar, pero aun así, prefiero un poco la versión pura.

Final: Semi seco, largo - desde un seco jerez oloroso con sabor a nuez hasta un dulce PX.

Bastante magnífico HP que tiene influencias de jerez oloroso. ¡Bien hecho Kirkwall!

Highland Park, Single Cask Series. Juhlaviski – Onnittelut 100-vuotiaalle Suomelle Orkneyn saarelta (in English: Celebration whisky - Congratulations to Finland on the 100th anniversary from Orkney island). Distilled 2004, bottled 2016. 12 years old. 1st fill European sherry puncheon, cask no. 1536. Limited to 636 bottles. 59,2 %

Finland is celebrating today its 100th anniversary of independence, so I think the perfect dram for the occasion is this HP’s special single cask bottling.

Color: Mahogany.

Nose: Robust with obvious oloroso sherry oak. Very gentle peat smoke hovering in the distance. Nice spiciness indicates of an active cask at play. Needs time in the glass to fully open up. After a while, as it developes (with the help of water), sweet fruity elements appear with some notes of burnt caramel.

Palate: Complex. High cocoa dark chocolate, orange peel / bitter oranges to start with. Definitely needs some water, without it the taste is slightly closed.  Water brings out herbal elements, thyme and maybe a touch of rosemary and also some pine sap. There is also a nutty side to this dram, walnuts and tannic walnut skin, which draw things to a drier ground. The distillery character honey adds sweet balance to the palate.

Finish: Dry. Medium roasted coffee and honey in a medium length manner.

Good stuff but not epic.


So there you go, put on Jean Sibelius´s Finlandia, pour yourself a dram and enjoy.

Destilado en 2004, embotellado en 2016. Añejado 12 años. 1st fill European Sherry Puncheon, barril número 1536. Limitado a 636 botellas. 59,2 %

Hoy Finlandia celebra su centenario de la independencia así que pienso que la perfecta copa para la ocasión es el whisky especial single cask de HP.

Color: Caoba.

Nariz: Robusta con obvio roble de jerez oloroso. Humo de turba muy ligero en la distancia. Agradables especias indican que ha estado en un barril activo. Necesita tiempo en la copa para abrirse bien. Después de un rato, como está desarrollando (con la ayuda de agua), unos elementos afrutados aparecen con unas notas de caramel quemado.

Paladar: Complejo. Chocolate negro intenso, cáscara de naranja / naranja amarga para empezar. Definitivamente necesita un poco de agua, sin ella está un poco cerrado. El agua hace que aparezcan elementos herbales, tomillo y a lo mejor un toque de romero y también un poco de savia de pino. Además hay un lado diferente de esta copa, nueces y su cáscara tánica. Estos elementos lo hacen más seco. Miel, el carácter de la destilería, añade dulzura y equilibrio en el paladar.

Final: Seco. Café medio tostado y miel de una manera medio larga.

Buena copa pero no épica.

Pues bien, pon  Finlandia de Jean Sibelius y sírvete una copa y disfruta.

Highland Park has treated its fans in the northern hemisphere pretty well by launching a series of single cask releases quite recently. These single cask bottlings have been released exclusively in Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Germany, a total of 11 different single cask bottlings so far.
For Finland, this fine Orkney distillery has offered two different bottlings in a short period of time; the one I’m reviewing today and another which is 12 years old, matured in 1st fill European Sherry Puncheon, a bottling to celebrate Finland's 100 years of independency. I’ll be reviewing that one later on, so stay tuned.

Color: Rich amber (suggestive of a pretty active cask).


Nose: Bang on oloroso character. Extremely seductive with notes of sultanas, dates, smoked raisins, sherry wood spices. Maybe also some raspberry jam. Clean as a whistle - no sulphur, whatsoever.  Very nice indeed.

Palate: Full-on chewy sherry character. Medium bodied and quite sweet to start with. There’s tight sherry wood on the start, followed by typical notes of an active 1st fill sherry cask; mixed dried fruits with dark chocolate and a fistful of moist sultanas, not to forget some roasted coffee. A very good example of a (decent) first fill sherry cask. It’s hot but not unpleasently so. Water brings out some notes of Tyrkisk Peber, sweet soya sauce along with aniseed and more dry oak. It also gets a little fruitier as it progresses, dried fruits develop into sweet berry jam. But where are the characteristics of Highland Park? Heather, honey? I guess some bitter oranges will count.

Finish: Long and dark.

Wow, this a true sherry monster, firing on all twelve cylinders at full throttle. But where is the distillery character, some might ask - a very active cask has done its part to hide it under its weight. Love the dram though, superb stuff. Lucky to be a Finn.

Highland Park ha tratado muy bien a sus aficionados en el norte y ha lanzado una serie de single casks últimamente. Estos single casks han sido lanzados al mercado en Suecia, Dinamarca, Finlandia y Alemania, un total de 11 diferentes single casks hasta ahora.


Para Finlandia la fina destilería de Orkney ha ofrecido dos diferentes embotellamientos durante un periodo bastante corto; él que tengo en la cata hoy y otro que tiene 12 años, madurado en puncheons europeos de jerez de primer uso, un embotellamiento para celebrar el centenario de independencia de Finlandia. Voy a catar éste más tarde, permanezcan atentos.

Color: Ámbar (parece que el barril ha sido bastante activo).

Nariz: Da en el clavo con el carácter oloroso. Extremadamente seductora con notas de sultanas, dátiles, pasas ahumadas, especias de madera de jerez. Quizas también un poco de mermelada de frambuesa. Limpio como los chorros del oro – no hay azufre, en absoluto. Muy agradable de verdad.

Paladar: Intensivo y gomoso carácter de jerez. Al principio es de cuerpo medio y bastante dulce. Tiene notas de madera de jerez muy fuertes, luego notas tipicales de un barril activo de jerez de primer uso; frutas mixtas con chocolate negro y un puñado de jugosas sultanas y no vamos a olvidar un toque de café tostado. Es un muy buen ejemplo de un (decente) barril de jerez de primer uso. Es picante pero no de manera desagradable. Un poco de agua le da notas de Tyrkisk Peber, salsa de soja dulce, anís y más roble seco. Acumula más aromas afrutados mientras se desarrolla, frutas secadas se transforman en dulce mermelada de bayas. Pero, ¿dónde están las características de Highland Park? ¿Brezo, miel? Creo que algunas notas de naranjas amargas valen.

Final: Largo y oscuro.

Guau, es un verdadero monstruo de jerez, pisando el acelerador a fondo con todas las doce cilindros. Pero uno puede preguntar dónde está el carácter de la destilería – a lo mejor un barril muy activo ha hecho su parte en esconderlo bajo su peso. En todo caso me encanta esta copita, es un whisky magnífico. Soy feliz de ser finlandés.

Highland Park Loki,15 Year Old,Valhalla Collection, (21 000 bottles, aged in Spanish sherry casks & heavily peated casks). 48.7%.

The Nordic god Loki as some people claim was a God of Fire and was the son of two giants.
A shape-shifter who appears in the form of a salmon, a horse, a seal and a fly, Loki is traditionally a troublemaker of the highest order.

This is the second entry in Highland Park's Valhalla Collection. Loki comes housed in the same wooden frame as Thor, which was the first entry in this collection.


Nose: Honey, orange peel, sour, quite powerful smoke, in the end wet gravel.

Palate: Intensively sweet and sour, complex, smoke, salt, huge amount of honey, black pepper, lemon peel, orange,vanilla, camomile, coconut milk, mineral.

Finish: Long and salty, lots of honey, very waxy. This malt sticks to your tongue.

Very powerful and intense HP. I think this whisky is better than the first entry (Thor) in the Valhalla collection, altough Thor was also very good IMHO. Loki has some similarities to the official Highland Park 30 yo because of its powerful honey character.

Great whisky, but the price... well, it's a matter of opinion.. ;)

El dios nórdico Loki fue, dicen algunos, un Dios del Fuego y un hijo de dos gigantes.
Un cambiante de forma que aparece en la forma de un salmón, un caballo, una foca o una mosca, Loki es tradicionalmente un alborotador de primera clase.

Esta es la segunda entrada en la colección Valhalla de Highland Park. Loki es vendido en una caja de madera similar a la de Thor, la primera entrada en esta colección.

Nariz: Miel, cáscara de naranja, amargo, humo bastante fuerte, finalmente gravilla mojada.

Paladar: Agridulzura intensa, complejo, humo, sal, una cantidad enorme de miel, pimienta negra, cáscara de limón, naranja, vainilla, infusión de manzanilla, leche de coco, mineral.

Final: Largo y salado, mucha miel, muy ceroso.El sabor de esta malta te permanece en la boca durante mucho tiempo.

Un Highland Park muy fuerte e intenso. Pienso que este whisky es mejor que la primera entrada (Thor) en la colección Valhalla, aunque Thor también fue muy rico, en mi humilde opinión. En Loki hay algo parecido al oficial Highland Park de 30 años, creo que es porque tiene tanta miel en su carácter.  

Un whisky estupendo, pero su precio... es cuestión de opinión..  ;)
