From the whisky capital of the world comes today’s dram. Johnnie Walker enthusiasts should know that Mortlach is the key component in most of the J.W. bottlings and if you have done your homework, you ought to know that Mortlach was the first distillery in Dufftown (established in 1823).

The Dutch independent bottler, The Ultimate Whisky Company is a quite good pick, in case you are on a low budget and yearning to purchase especially a bottle of single cask Scotch whisky – the TUWC has quite a vast variety of single casks from different distilleries to choose from. I bought this bottle from a Berliner whisky retailer for a very reasonable price a few years back. Let’s see if this was a real bargain or not.

Color: Fino sherry. Color reveals the fact that we are talkin’ about a second or even a fourth fill sherry butt here.

Nose: A cloud of sulphur which disappears very quickly, never to return. Tart with loads of cooked fruits and some fresh apple – it reminds me of the odor that hits you at the distillery when you enter the mash room. After a while oak enters the stage, with some sawdust on the solders. Distinctive notes of fennel seeds or if you’re in Turkey, a sprinkle of raki.

Palate: Nicely fat and oily texture with very sharp and acrid / citric notes. Barley sugars and soft sherry notes balance the palate into the right direction. Towards the end some herb infused honey. As the label says, this is matured in a sherry butt for nearly two decades… In a blind taste I would go terribly wrong with this one, my guess would be more like bourbon maturation with a sherry finish.

Finish: Fairly short with some ginger and honey.

A pretty healthy bottling - no flaws detected, yet nothing triumphant either. Neverthless good value for your money.

La copita de hoy viene de la capital mundial de whisky. Los aficionados de Johnnie Walker sabrán que Mortlach es la parte clave de mayor parte de los embotellamientos Johnnie Walker y si han hecho sus deberes, deberían saber que Mortlach fue la primera destilería en Dufftown (fundada en 1823).

La embotelladora independiente holandesa, The Ultimate Whisky Company, es una buena alternativa especialmente si está en busca de un whisky single cask de Escocia con un precio competitivo – el TUWC tiene un amplio surtido de whiskies single cask de diferentes destilerías para elegir. Compré esta botella en una tienda de whiskies en Berlin hace unos años a un precio razonable. Vamos a ver si era una ganga o no.

Color: Jerez Fino. El color revela el hecho de que estamos hablando de un barril de jerez de segundo o hasta cuarta uso.
Nariz: Una nube de azufre que desaparece pronto y nunca vuelve. Ácido con mucha fruta cocinada y un poco de manzana fresca – me hace pensar en el olor que hay en la puerta al entrar en una sala de maceración.  Después de un rato aparece roble con un poco de aserrín. Distintivas notas de semillas de hinojo o si estás en Turquía, de raki.

Paladar: Tiene una agradable textura gruesa y aceitosa con notas muy ácidas y cítricas. Azúcares de cebada y suaves notas de jerez hacen que el paladar adquiera más equilibrio. Hacia el final hay un poco de miel con hierbas. Como se pone en la etiqueta, está madurado en un barril de jerez durante casi dos décadas… en una prueba “en ciegas” yo me habría equivocado terriblemente con este whisky, probablemente habría adivinado que se trata de un whisky madurado en bourbon con un acabado de jerez.

Final: Bastante corto con un poco de jengibre y miel.

Un embotellamiento bastante sano – no tiene ningunos defectos, pero no hay nada triunfante tampoco. En todo caso, tiene una buena relación calidad-precio.

Blair Athol, The Ultimate Selection 25 yo, 1988. Distilled 21.10.1988. Bottled 14.8.2014. Refill sherry butt, cask 6927, 441 bottles. 46%.

First a little bit of background because we ain’t talking about any fashionable mainstream distillery here: Blair Athol is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, it was founded in 1798 but there have been quite a few breaks in the production during the past decades due to different reasons. Blair Athol’s water comes from the Allt Dour (Burn of the Otter) which flows past the distillery; some of you may remember the otter on the label of the Flora & Fauna bottling. Aldour was in fact the original name of the distillery. Almost every drop of the whisky that Blair Athol produces goes to Bells’ blends and it is the main component in them.  Blair Athol whisky is mainly matured in sherry casks which allegedly give the best results. Today’s indie bottling is matured in a refill sherry butt, let’s find out how it is:

Color: Amber.

Nose: Fairly big impact of leather jacket, next my schnoz goes into a chocolate shop: After Eight (mint chocolate), pralines, milk chocolate, white chocolate, fudge. The 25-year wood contact makes its mark, in this dram that means sawn oak. There is no sulphur but there is a hint of bicycle innertube though. At the end some coconut butter & fresh butter.

Palate: I was expecting more sweetness after the nose, but maybe the oak has sucked some of it out. Leather makes its mark. Oak gives some wood spices into the mix with some fudge & cocoa. Crisp red berries. Herbal notes add balance & excitement into the taste and mint plays quite a dominant role here. After a good half an hour in the glass some more sweetness steps in.

Finish: Liquorice, some bitter notes in the form of Fernet Branca. Oak dries out the fairly longish finish.  

Well, there was no big ‘wow’ effect in it. I enjoyed more the nose; palatewise it wasn’s too complex but altogether it was quite enjoyable anyway. A dram to be enjoyed in the library after eight o’clock.

Primero unos antecedentes porque no estamos hablando de una destilería de moda y muy popular: Blair Athol es una de las destilerias más antiguas de Escocia, fue fundada en 1798 pero ha habido bastantes interrupciones en la producción durante las últimas decadas debido a varias razones. El agua de Blair Athol viene de Allt Dour (Burn of the Otter) que fluye por delante de la destilería; algunos de vosotros podéis recordar la nutria en la etiqueta de la botella de Flora & Fauna. Aldour era de hecho el primer nombre de la destilería. Casi cada gota del whisky que Blair Athol produce se usa para las mezclas de Bells y es su componente principal. El whisky de Blair Athol está madurado mayormente en barricas de jerez, lo que presuntamente da los mejores resultados. El embotellamiento independiente de hoy está madurado en una barrica de jerez de segundo uso, vamos a ver cómo es:

Color: Ámbar.

Nariz: Un impacto bastante fuerte de chaqueta de cuero, luego mi nariz me lleva a una chocolatería: After Eight (chocolate de menta), pralinés, chocolate de leche, chocolate blanco, dulce de leche y mantequilla. El contacto con la madera durante 25 años ha dejado su huella, en esta copita quiere decir que hay unas notas de roble aserrado. No hay ningún azufre pero sí hay un toque de cámara de rueda. En el final hay un poco de aceite de coco y mantequilla fresca. 

Paladar: Esperaba más dulzura como estaba en la nariz, pero a lo mejor el roble le ha quitado un poco de eso. Un toque de cuero. El roble añade algunas notas de especias aromáticas en la mezcla y también un poco del sabor a dulce de leche y cocoa. Bayas rojas agrias; un toque de hierbas añade equilibrio y excitación al sabor, menta está bastante dominante aquí. Déjalo en el vaso por una media hora y más dulzura aparecerá.

Final: Regaliz salado, unas notas amargas parecidas a Fernet Branca. El roble hace que seque el final bastante largo.

Bueno, no había ningún efecto ‘guau’ en esta copita. Me gustó más la nariz; en cuanto al paladar no estuvo muy complejo pero en total fue bastante placentero de todos modos. Un trago para ser disfrutado en la biblioteca después de las ocho.

Mortlach The Ultimate 2003. Aged 10 Years. Bourbon barrel, Cask no: 800 218. Distilled 09/06/03 Bottled 10/01/14. 338 bottles. 46%.

My personal favorite of Mortlachs has always been the 16 year old sherry matured expression of the Flora and Fauna series, it’s a meaty and delicious classic sherried dram – a kind of classic in the whisky world. Nevertheless let’s forget the sherry butts and focus on bourbon barrels – today on the test bench is a solely bourbon matured, a decade old indie Mortlach.

Distillation trivia from the TWE-blog : ”Mortlach uses a complex distillation process, where some of the spirit is distilled twice, some three times, and some maybe even four by some explanations, averaging out to 2.81 times.  It’s similar to what they do at Springbank and Benrinnes….” Interesting indeed, let’s see:

Color:  White wine / pale gold.

Nose: Quite mellow. Yellow fruitiness and barley sugar are detected. There are also some caramel and vanilla flowing in the air. In one word: gentle.


Palate: Very light smokiness on the arrival. Overall sweet’n’spirity - quite harsh at the beginning.  Variety of sweet elements such as barley sugar, caramel, crème brûlée  and icing sugar, even some honeydew melon and grape juice. Quite thick and oily in consistency, mouth-coating. After a while the sweetness turns into tingling spiciness, including notes of spicy mustard.

Finish: Sweet’n spicy, mustard seeds. Medium lenght.

A rather simple and harmless bottling, the spiritness and little harshness in spirit indicate that the cask in question is a second or even a third fill bourbon cask. Does it unmask the Mortlach’s distillery character, I don’t know. Maybe the sherry treatment however does the necessary tricks which are needed to get the best out of the Mortlach’s spirit. In this case also a few extra years of maturation might help for sure. Don’t get me wrong – this is a fairly decent dram after all, I just prefer sherry matured Mortlachs - it’s like basil and tomato, they’re a match made in heaven.  ;)

Mortlach The Ultimate 2003. Añejo 10 años. Barril de Bourbon, Tonel no: 800 218. Destilado 09/06/03 Embotellado 10/01/14. 338 botellas. 46%

Entre los Mortlachs mi favorito personal siempre ha sido el de 16 años de la serie Flora y Fauna, madurado en barriles de jerez. Es un trago sustancioso y delicioso - una especie de clásico en el mundo de whiskies. En todo caso, ahora vamos a olvidarnos de los barriles de jerez y concentrarnos en barriles de bourbon – hoy ponemos a prueba un Mortlach independiente de 10 años que ha sido madurado solamente en barriles de bourbon.

Unas trivialidades sobre su destilación del blog de TWE: “Mortlach usa un proceso complejo de destilación, en el cual una parte del licor está destilado dos veces, una parte tres veces, y una parte hasta cuatro veces según algunas explicaciones, teniendo como promedio un 2.81 veces. Es similar a lo que hacen en Springbank y Benrinnes…” De verdad muy interesante, así que vamos a ver:

Color: Vino blanco / oro pálido.

Nariz: Bastante suave. Se pueden notar frutas amarillas y azúcar cande. También hay un poco de caramelo y vainilla flotando en el aire. En una palabra: suave.

Paladar: Primero hay humo muy ligero. En general es dulce y alcohólico – bastante duro al principio. Una variedad de elementos dulces como por ejemplo azúcar cande, caramelo, crème brûlée y azúcar glasé, también un poco de melón dulce y zumo de uvas. Relativamente espeso y aceitoso en consistencia, cubierta la boca. Después de un rato la dulzura convierte en unas especias, incluyendo notas de mostaza picante.

Final: Dulce y especiado, semillas de mostaza. De largo medio.

Un embotellamiento bastante simple e inofensivo. El alcohol bastante fuerte y la dureza del licor indican que el barril usado para la maduración ha sido un barril de bourbon de segundo uso o hasta de tercera uso. ¿Revela el character de destilería de Mortlach?, no lo sé. A lo mejor la maduración en barriles de jerez le hace lo que le falta para sacar lo mejor del licor de Mortlach. En este caso también unos años más de maduración podrían ayudar con certeza. No me entiendas mal – es un trago bastante decente en todo caso, solo prefiero Morlachs madurados en barriles de jerez – es como albahaca y tomate, una pareja ideal.   ;)

Tamdhu 2004, The Ultimate Selection, Cask 5447 (Sherry Butt), Distilled 29.6.2004, Bottled 4.10.2012, 60,2%.

To be honest this is my first ever encounter with this newly reopened Speysider, this one was obviously distilled during the old owners (Highland Distillers).

Nose: Young, whisper of a new-make, red currants, crisp red autumn berries, nutty, almonds,
caramel, a bit chalky, butter, sherry, vanilla. Very nice and inviting.

Palate: Hot, sharp/acid, crisp, quite narrow, coffee, red currants, oloroso sherry, some smoke in the distance.Water just flattens the whole package - so enjoy this one neat.

Finish: Wet gravel, sour, winey, medium lenght.

Obviously a young whisky, it has a very nice nose but the palate is too narrow / sharp for my taste. A few extra years of maturation might definitely help.

Tamdhu 2004, The Ultimate Selection, Cask 5447 (Sherry Butt),
Destilado 29.6.2004, Embotellado 4.10.2012, 60,2%.

Este es mi primer encuentro con este recién reabierto Speysider, obviamente ha sido destilado durante los tiempos de los dueños anteriores (Highland Distillers).

Nariz: Joven, un susurro de new-make, grosella roja, crujientes bayas rojas de otoño, sabor a nueces, almendras,caramelo, un poco calcáreo, mantequilla, jerez, vainilla. Muy agradable y tentador.

Paladar: Picante, ácido, crujiente, bastante limitado, café, rosella roja, jerez oloroso, un poco de humo a lo lejos.Agua simplemente aplana el paquete entero - así que es mejor beberlo puro.

Final: Gravilla mojada, amargo, vinoso, de largo mediano.

Obviamente es un whisky joven, tiene una nariz muy agradable pero la paladar es demasiado limitado / ácido para mi gusto.Unos años más de maduración podrían ayudar mucho.
