An Uisge Beatha from the legendary closed Islay distillery. This one in question is the 6th release of Diageo's famous year Special Release Port Ellens; latest in this series was last year's (1978 - 34 yo) 13th release. The rumours say Diageo's stocks are drying out of these Port Ellens, so it remains to be seen how many releases will see the light of day in the future. As you already might know, prices of these PE:s are nowadays gone off the roof but fortunately this 6th release was sold here in the Finnish Alko a few years back for a very reasonable price, I think at the time it was cheapest in the whole world at 260 € - those were the days... So let's have a taste.
Color: Straw.
Nose: Bonfire on the seaside, cold ashes. Splash of lemon juice, sweet fruitiness. A little bit dusty. Sea air / sea shore - Islay, in a nutshell.
Palate: Full bodied. Multidimensional with layers after layers. Maritime (salty) with sweet lemon. Obligatory smoke and peat but in a discreet manner. Almond milk, strong coconut milk which brings me a funny resemblance of Piña Colada (rum-based cocktail made with rum, cream of coconut and pineapple juice). Mustard seeds. Hints of rose petals and nettle? High-end pralines. All in a perfect balance. Smooth yet ballsy.Finish: Butterscotch. Cooked fruits. Sour & smoky & savory. Fisherman's Friend. Sticks to your tonque for ages.
So, what else could I say but seriously superb stuff. If you ever come a cross with these Port Ellens have a dram while you can - it will cost you a bit but you'll be rewarded.

Un Uisge Beatha de la legendaria destilería de Islay ya cerrada. Éste es el sexto lanzamiento de los especiales lanzamientos anuales de Port Ellens de Diageo; el más reciente (el décimo tercero) de estos lanzamientos fue en el año pasado (1978 - 34 años). Corren rumores de que a Diageo se le están agotando estos Port Ellens, así que vamos a ver cuantos lanzamientos van a ver la luz en el futuro. Como ya sabrán, los precios de estos Port Ellens están por las nubes hoy en día pero por suerte este lanzamiento número seis fue vendido hace unos años aquí en Finlandia en las tiendas de Alko en un precio muy justo, creo que el precio (260 €) fue el más bajo del mundo en estos tiempos - qué tiempos aquellos... Pues bien, vamos a probarlo.
Color: Paja.
Nariz: Una fogata en la playa, cenizas frías. Un toque de zumo de limón, frutas dulces. Un poco de olor a polvo. Aire marino / la costa - Islay, en pocas palabras.
Paladar: Con mucho cuerpo. Multidimensional con capa tras capa. Marítimo (salado) con limón dulce. Humo y turba obligatorio pero de manera discreto. Leche de almendra, leche de coco fuerte que me hace pensar curiosamente en Piña Colada (un coctél hecho con ron, leche de coco y zumo de piña). Semillas de mostaza. ¿Un toque de pétalos de rosa y ortiga? Unos pralinés de lujo. Todo está en perfecto equilibrio. Suave pero además con muchos cojones.
Final: Dulce de manteca y azúcar. Frutas cocinadas. Amargo & ahumado & sabroso. Fisherman's Friend. Dura muchísimo tiempo en la boca.
No tengo otra opción que decir que de verdad es un producto magnífico. Si algún día tienes la posibilidad de probar estos Port Ellens, hazlo mientras sea posible - te va costar un poco pero valdrá la pena.
